The feminist movement has had a massive impact on industries across the world. Several industries have started to democratize how they operate, and most importantly, how they pay and create a comfortable, non -toxic work environment for their stakeholders.

Feminists have always been sceptical of the mainstream porn that we have consumed- their direction, scripts and even their working conditions. However, most of these doubts were legitimized when women from the adult entertainment industry started to speak up about their harrowing experiences. Porn stars are not only paid a meagre payment but are also forced into exploitative contracts. In a BBC interview, Mia Khalifa had opened up about her experience of her short yet traumatizing experience in the porn industry. She stated, “ Porn contracts prey on vulnerable girls.” She went on to recall her own short-lived experience and how it continues to haunt her over the years.

Due to the rampant critique of mainstream porn, Ethical porn emerged as an important alternative. Ethical porn can sometimes be referred to as Feminist Porn or Fair-Trade Porn. It is pornography that is made consensually, treats the performers with respect and pays them fairly. There is a mutual understanding and everyone is made to feel comfortable on set. Another important aspect of ethical porn is that the contracts are written, keeping in mind the porn star’s terms and conditions.  

Pornography is not just an entertainment industry- it is one of the first spaces through which young people learn how to navigate sex. Every day, young boys and girls are consuming porn and are ready to enact them in reality- it is dangerous, unhealthy and unrealistic.
